Travel Insurance

Hello I was wondering if anybody knows where I can get Travel insurance for my son, he has PSC and wants to travel to usa from UK.

I always use Columbus they seem to be cheaper than everywhere else! http://www.columbusdirect.com/travel-insurance/pre-existing-medical-insurance/ Hope that helps you!

Dear Linda,

Most travel agents in this country are happy to arrange travel insurance. Some of the on-line travel sites also offer that option.

If you have an American Express credit card account, they carry excellent and highly affordable travel insurance. That's the best one and the most affordable one around. I researched this at great length at one point. It's fairly easy to qualify for American Express.

Does the condition alter the price? Thanks all.

Thank you for all the replies they have been most helpful. Unfortunately the few that will insure my son are all over a thousand pound for a two week single trip. Is that the usual cost or is it because my son has been in hospital this year with the condition?

Gloria,

I was never asked about my condition when I got the travel insurance from American Express. As long as you have a card and sign up for the service (and it's only charged when you book air travel), the cost is the same. I think it's about $28. Really great price when you go looking at other travel insurance.

Travel insurance is more for lost luggage, delays, accidents, right? I don’t think premiums will change much as pre-existing conditions are not covered anyway.

Also, have you tried taking vancomycin. It helps my daughter’s condition a lot. Google for “Vancomycin PSC” to find out more.
Or read this article from Stanford.

Thank you so much for the information it is very interesting and something I will look into. Unfortunately we do need medical insurance to travel to the US, well we would be stupid to go without it!! There are companies that will insure my son but it is very very expensive (over £1,000.00). You can opt to go without insuring the pre-existing medical condition but I would hate to think what it would cost if he had a problem while out there. Looks like I will just have to pay it. Thanks again for the info.

To BenY - travel insurance also covers illness and not being able to make a flight because of it. Any condition is covered, including existing illnesses. Or pre-existing, as many like to call it. It's not just for lost luggage, etc., and it's why I chose the American Express plan. But what Linda needs, coverage while here in the US, is a different matter.

Linda, you should first check with your current insurance company (or is it the national health plan) and see what they would cover if you're outside the country. Never can tell! A lot of companies will cover out-of-network care. But, healthcare travel back home - in medically supervised jets - different story.

Thanks Danabee I will certainly check out the National Health Service and see what they cover, I am not very optimistic but definitely worth a try. Thanks again for all the help I have had from the good people on this forum.
