If you already have PSC, what different symptoms would you have that would indicate UC?
Diarrhea (need to go often to the bathroom with liquid stools, the need can come very quickly), blood in stools, pain in the abdomen.
Read somewhere that UC associated with PSC often runs a milder course than people with UC alone, but sadly not for everyone. The only way to be sure is to do a colonoscopy where the practitioner checks the state of your colon, look for inflammation and takes some biopsy samples to check for invisible inflammation.
“Since the colitis in PSC characteristically is mild and sometimes even asymptomatic, colonoscopy with biopsies is recommended as part of the routine work-up in a patient diagnosed with PSC” -> taken from the recommendation of EASL.
Thank you! Occasional stomach cramps, no other symptoms so far.
Merry, Have you been diagnosed with ulcerative colitis?
It is more or less unmistakable. Severe colon issues.
Good luck!
Susan
No I haven’t been diagnosed with ulcerative colitis.
Had to get a colonoscopy specifically because of a PsC diagnosis , I am completely a symptomatic and they found Minor UC . I had no idea .
I was "lucky?’ in that I had my UC in 2006, resulting in a pouch, and so did not have both; my psc was diagnosed in 2013.
Mine was diarrhea and very smelly stool.
I would suggest to discuss with your doctor for a screening colonoscopy.
