Food intolerance, allergies when taking vancomycin

Hello eveyone!
I’ve had exposed psc since 2010. and since 2018 I started taking vancomycin, took a break in 2020 for six months, after quitting there was a worsening of ulcerative colitis. I resumed vancomycin and took it until fall 2024.
I had the following problems, I started having allergic reactions to many foods: sneezing, runny nose, itchy body and I attribute this to the long term use of vancomycin. And here’s why: I am not truly allergic to the foods that are causing the reactions, and they are most likely due to the fact that histamine has become poorly absorbed, possibly because the enzyme Diamine Oxidase is not enough in the body, and it may have decreased due to a decrease in beneficial bacteria and Short-chain triglycerides (butyrate, acetate, propionate).
links to my conclusion

Who has been taking vancomycin for a long time, has anyone else had allergic symptoms from eating? especially fermented foods like kefir, yogurt contain a lot of histamine.

Hi artbk:

This is really interesting but not good for you. I haven’t heard of any complaints about vanco regarding new onset of AR. If you know the name of the pharma company where you received the vanco, you can call them and report it. You can also contact the FDA directly at their SmartHub website: https://www.safetyreporting.fda.gov/smarthub or by phone at: 1-888-463-6332. If there is an association, it might be quite rare and could slip through the cracks.

I hope your symptoms improve.

Anne

Hey there thanks for sharing this information.
I am a true believer that frequent use of antibiotics completely throws off the good gut bacteria. But I am not a doctor, and we all must PERSONALLY weigh the negative and positive benefits with any medicine.
I very rarely use antibiotics (10 years ago or more) but I am sure my day is coming as my slow PSC progression may one day increase rapidly.
I can tell you by far my largest struggle is muscle inflammation. Whether this is a poor gut health, my slow moving PSC or mild UC, we must remember these alone are autoimmune diseases. Finding which ones is causing most of our discomforts is so hard to figure out…
