Disability process/ need advice

the need for applying for disability has become more pronounced. It looks to me like you have to quit work for a year before you apply. Can this be true? Please advise.

Dolphin,

Is your hubby on a transplant list? if so, his transplant coordinator would be your best help in navigating through disability.

One thing I know about transplant and disability is that the SSA considers a transplant to qualify someone for disability for a year.

But the "stuff" we go through just to get to that point? If he is not on a transplant list, his liver doc should be of some assistance in applying for disability as the SSA looks pretty closely at a patient's medical records, as they should.

I'm so sorry to hear about your situation...I understand completely as I've been there myself. I can share with you a little about how I acquired Social Security Disability. I retired from my job in 2002 at the age of 54,and began itching that same year. As it progressed to an unlivable situation I tried applying for SSD and at first was turned down, I think mainly because I had not submitted a detailed letter of my condition and suffering, so I reapplied in 2005 and wrote out a detailed description of my situation with PSC and presented this to my gastroenologist as I did not have a liver dr. at that time, and he signed it willingly...So I completed the app for SSD and acquired all of the documentation that was needed and went directly to the Social Security Admin and they were very helpful and submitted my app at that time...I finally received my first check in Feb. of 2007 which included all the back pay from the date of my submission...My husband was already retired and receiving his monthly pension ...I was 58 at the time I received my disability but I did have to wait 2 yrs from the date of application (2005)before qualifying for medicare. I live in California and if you are disabled and cannot work, one can apply for state disability until the SSD is initiated...I don't know how much help this is but my heart goes out to you and your husband and I wish you much success in this endeavor.

Actually, I just turned 67 in August and yes the SSD amount did not change last year, but they converted the status to Social Security...I believe the original disability amount was based on the rate at age 66. Actually we too have to pay for the medi-gap which runs about $365.00 per person, per month but includes the prescription benefits, thankfully as my prescriptions are very expensive, especially vancomycin...Best wishes to you and your husband and hopefully it will all work out...

Sorry, I just wanted to add one more thing...I checked our Medicare Plan and found a little more information on Supplements, medigap, etc...It appears there's alot to choose from with monthly premiums from about $49 and up and they all include prescription benefits....The reason I wasn't aware of this is because my husband worked for the county for 40 years and Cal Pers converted our insurance policy to a supplemental. When your husband applies for social security and medicare, they will send you all the information....Well, I hope this helps a little and again I hope everything works out for you both.
