Low Platelet Count

I am in the process of getting on the liver transplant list, so I am doing all of the pre testing and procedures that are needed. I had blood, drawn, xrays, sonograms, etc, which all came back normal, except my echo. The cardiolist found pulmonary hypertension, so no I have to get a cardiac catherization teat. I know that with PSC, blood levels are up and down and my platelet count went from 84 to 72, which the hospital told me about. The coordinator called me and asked have I ever had a platelet transfusion, which I haven’t. I am scheduled to have this procedure this Friday and she told me that they were going to draw my blood just in case I need a transfusion. Has anyone had this issue along their journey?

Tiffanie, our platelets are low because the liver is not working as well as it should.

But I have not seen anything about a platelet transfusion.

How are you getting along these days? Were you listed for transplant and if so what is your current MELD score? Wishing you well. I hope you get your new liver soon.

My blood work last week showed my platelets going from 128 back in February to 93. To my untrained eye, that scares me because that tells me that something is happening and it's not good.

I have my yearly testing in mid-June, so that may help figure this out.

Not sure if this is any encouragement or not, but attached is a PDF of the range of fluctuation of my Platelet count from year of diagnosis with PSC to current month post transplant. It may give you an idea of the sense of how mine went up and down prior to transplant. The cells highlighted in yellow are abnormally low. Hope your appointment goes well in June.

I did not realize it could fluctuate so drastically from one day to the next. That provides some encouragement, but also is a bit disconcerting at the same time.

I'll cross my fingers.
