Jaundice questions

I noticed yellowing in the outer corners of my son’s eyes. Its not noticeable unless he looks to the left and/or right. His latest labs had bilerubin at 1.6. No other symptoms present. Is that how jaundice starts?

Yes, that’s usually the most earliest signs in my experience.

It doesn’t immediately cover the entire whites?

That’s correct. It’s all based on your bilirubin level. The higher, the level, the more jaundice you will be. Are you taking vancomycin? That’s usually will help slow the progression down.

Its my son, not me. He’s been taking Vanco since early 2017. his last bloodtest in February had bilirubin at 1.6. I have been on this site since 2016 and have posted frequently about Vanco.

Sorry Jace. I know you have been on here for years. We answer so many inquiries that sometimes I don’t connect the dots for each person. If you are seeing his eyes changing at a 1.6 I would ask his doctor. They may need to check to make sure he doesn’t have a blockage in the common bile duct. My bilirubin would always shoot up when I had a blockage but everyone is different. What’s his ALP? Take care.

Jace,

Yellowing in the eyes seemed to build gradually, at the same time as other parts of my body. That will happen when the bilirubin goes above 1. It usually started in the corners before becoming noticeable elsewhere in the eyes.

Jeff

Thanks. He has very dark urine and had a pale stool this morning. This afternoon he had a normal colored stool. No skin coloring, and he feels completely normal. He had an ultrasound 2 weeks ago which showed “Mild extrahepatic biliary ductal dilatation with the common hepatic duct measuring 8 mm in maximal AP diameter, tapering to 3 mm more distally. Similar findings noted previously. Mild intrahepatic biliary ductal dilatation.” So, this was unexpected. Diagnosed 10 years ago and this is the 1st time he has had any kind of a symptom.

Jace, has he had an ERCP before? If he’s getting a lot of beading in the ducts that may be causing the elevated levels.

Mark

He has never had or needed an ERCP. He’s never had any symptoms beyond elevated LFT’s. So far today his urine is normal in color. Dr. will wait for blood test results.
