Hello Guys I’m Terry and looking for advice here. I have been reading since last night and it seems depressing to me as most of you seem to have had extensive tests, procedures, etc. I barely every go to the doc now and I am very worried about this diagnosis I got yesterday from an MRCP. Went because Blood came in at ALP 364 ALT 276 AST 155.
We finally received our first shipment of Vancomycin for my 22 year old son. It came is 6 bottles, already mixed in solution, and its 1 month’s supply. the specifics of the brand: Vancomycin Hydrochloride Powder, manufactured by CutisPharma. FIRST-Vancomycin. What brand is this? Any opinions?
Also, he is to take 500 mg 3x/day. The bottles are 10 fl oz. 500 mg is a little less than 1 teaspoon, correct? Is he to take so little each dose?
Jace,
I found an online calculator that converts mg to teaspoons. 500 mg is only .10 of a teaspoon. Not very much at all. Here’s the calculator. Hope this helps.

To confirm, the vancomycin powder arrived premixed in the solution? There should be an indication on the bottles or in the instructions as to the potency (eg. 5ml = 250mg). Cutis Pharma labels this with a generic compound NDC so it is hard to tell where the vanco comes from, either in house or from another manufacturer. Most IV vanco tends to be good stuff, but this is always a variable to explore if your son doesn’t fully normalize.
You should be able to find medicine spoons, droppers, or oral syringes at a local pharmacy. These will be labeled in ml increments. Let’s say that 10ml = 500mg. You want to shake the bottle to make sure that the vanco is fully suspended in the solution then you want to measure out 10ml of solution and drink. Usually they recommend refrigerating the main solution, but don’t stress about this for daily doses as it won’t degrade at room temps over a day or so. When I didn’t have access to a refrigerator and needed portability I would fill oral syringes with daily doses, put a stopper on the tip, and put in a ziplock.
Vancomycin is hard on the teeth when taken in liquid form. Plan on 4 or more trips a year to the dentist to clear the extra plaque and staining. Some users are able to get around this by drinking through a straw.
All that said there should be instructions with this kit. If not, contact Cutis Pharma to confirm the mix of the solution and their recommended procedure.
Thanks. I contacted the pharmacy and they said 500 mg is 20 ml, so that is what he is taking. Everything came pre-mixed in the solution.
We’re off and running, so we’ll see how things go.
Hi Abc,
Really sorry, Kabi is not available in Ireland, they will be fully licensed in 2019. Im getting Kabi from Denmark. Any unlicensed distributor can get it for you, from any part of the Europe. Please try medisource.ie. Daniela
I believe my liver specialist would be very willing to prescribe OV on a case by case basis, as he finally has with me. He is at University of Massachusetts, Worcester. Privately message me for his name and number.
My son is also on Vanco and has done amazing on it. He is currently 13 years old and been on Vanco for 2 years now and continues to get better and feel better. He is being treated at Children’s Mercy in Kansas City. If it wasn’t for the Vanco I don’t think he would be where he is today. They are slowly reducing the amount of Vanco he takes.
Don, What brand Vanco is your son taking?
