Diet for PSC

Sorry if im a bit passionate about this but Sandwich bread!? Shepherds pie!? Thin crust pizza!? Coffee cake!? Thats just shit, im sorry but it is.

I mean where is the sweet potato? the brown rice? ancient grains? where is all the veggies? the fresh fruit? I have been watching doco's and perfecting my diet for years. I get more nutrients in one of my meals then you would for that whole day! We should be eating for our future, not eating JUST to get by and have a "tasty meal".

I still wonder why its in a discussion for diets of psc sufferers. I honestly believe that that diet is not what we should be doing, but you cant win a battle where belief is what your fighting for. What did you learn? Im eager to learn more.

Yeah we are all different but my issue is why don't we be SUPER healthy?

There are a few docos I think you should try watching. Food matters, eat fast and live longer, food inc and fat sick and nearly dead.

In the end the goal is to live longer and i wanna research as much as i can, so i can

I know it sounds like im having a dig at you but im not.

I strongly disagree with your statement that we have beaten the subject to death, we have barely scratched the surface. The science behind eating heathy is immense. And if eating super foods and drinking veggie juice could help us with PSC live 10 to 20 years longer then why isn't this at the top of our list??

I want sick people to WAKE UP, bombard your body with nutrients every day. start off slow so your body can get used to absorbing all the goodness and then hit it hard! Your body will sing out "i love this". I have done a lot of research and applied it to my own life. I havent had chronic abdominal pain since i started this year. I want everyone to know.

Science and experience says this can work, especially the young people with PSC who can try and preserve their livers. I wiiish someone told me about this when i was first diagnosed and now we have that opportunity to tell others.

Sprinter, I agree, since I started vegetable/herb juicing and eating healthy, my last three liver enzyme tests have gone to normal and the pains have mostly subsided. I say eat healthy and juice every day. I even started a nutritional balancing program. I have not been following the diet as well lately and I noticed more symptoms creeping up. I’ve been busy and do what I can but have been juicing every day and taking supplements for my balancing program. I have not been taking as many infrared saunas or eating as many vegetables but I plan on upping that again. Let’s also not forget to work out several days a week…exercise is also very important.

I agree! whats an infrared sauna good for?

I just forced this juice down, I don't eat for taste anymore haha.

Yeah working out is the best if you can do it, but gotta give yourself time to recover! I don't work so its a bit easier for me to stay healthy.

Have you tried acai??

There are two types of infrared sauna… far infrared which is the most common, and then near infrared lights which I use to draw out metals in my body…I have sent hair out to be tested and then the sauna is just part of the balancing program. It is good for some cancer as well…it penetrates deeper into the skin than other types of sauna. Look up Dr Larry Wilson nutritional balancing program.

excellent post. PSC is an autoimmune disease. it is a problem with your immune system not a problem with your liver. this is illustrated by the incidence of recurrence of PSC after transplant of a healthy liver. eliminate foods that cause autoimmune reactions such as gluten and dairy. reduce foods that increase inflammation such as sugar. add in curcumin which has shown to help regulate liver enzymes and also reduce inflammation. cook with coconut oil because it is a fat that does not need bile to be digested. this will help in the absorption of fat soluble vitamins a, k, d, and e.

I have Crohn's Disease and PSC, although the PSC is asymptomatic unless you are looking at the MRI. I have been following the SCD (specific carbohydrate diet) for the past 2 years which is essentially no grains, no sugar, with the important additions of probiotic or fermented foods, bone broth, and Omega 3 oils (fish mostly). This is designed to help with the Crohn's disease and it certainly has. But my liver tests over the past two years have moved towards or arrived at normal. This has been a surprise to my PSC specialist, who has said, "I've never seen this happen before." I can't say for a certainty that the diet has caused this drop, but it certainly didn't do me any harm.

i also agree with sprinter in regard to nutrient density. eat the most nutrient dense foods available to nourish the body in as many ways as possible.

nutrients are classified as "essential" and "non essential". non essential means the nutrient can be manufactured by the human body. essential nutrient means that the body cannot manufacture it and it needs to be obtained from outside the body, mostly eaten as absorbing through the skin will only provide minimal results.

when viewed through this perspective, organ meats, nuts/seeds, herbs/spices, and animal flesh is the most nutrient dense. eat the leanest (due to fat being a problem for PSC) most naturally raised options in those categories.

Hi I'm new here I have PSC since 2007. In the last tow year my blood values get worse because of a stenosis. from 2007 till 2012 I had a diet without sugar and low feet meals. After the treatment with a plastic stent for a seravel month I changed my diet again to:

low carbon, nearly feet free, now red meat, now nightshades plans because the a trigger inflammation.

Also I let my 4 hours time between meals as the insulin levels remain below.

This helps to get my blood values down. Before the treatment starts i had a ggt form aprox 1000 u/i after the stent was removed got down aprox 500. Now with the diet they stay by aprox 300. Also the Ap a lower then before.

In my opinion is that a special diet can help, but more important is the psychology. If you give up than you have lost. So think still positive. I now that is a pain in the a.. and it is sometimes really hard. I speak from experience.

I think every body have to find out what him self helps. There is no true or false. listen to your body and lock on to yout blood values.

Best regards

Mirco

Can you guys bubba29 and cosmo please email me with diet tips on things that worked for you? My email is ■■■■. I want to help people who want to apply vitamins and nutrients, along side there medication, by either, pointing people in the right direction or by planning diets and exercise plans for psc sufferers. And by doing this the more input from members the better!

Firstly I fully agree with the fact that we need to change our mind set to being positive, that has taken me 7 years to do, its a process, and it may be the single most important thing in our lives because without the will to live longer and be healthy we cannot make decisions to better ourselves. And I fully agree that we are all different and need different food plans specific to our individual needs.

But cosmo I disagree that there is "No true of False" when it comes to diet as I have researched for the last 2 years and applied nutrients and vitamins alongside exercise into my life with trial and error. I want every PSC sufferer to have this information! I have attached a picture to prove I have put my money where my mouth is, I have literally devoted my life to this, I don't work, I eat and sleep PSC/UC/CELIACS. I have been to hell just like most of you with chronic pain and fatigue etc. The goal is to live longer and to have quality of life.

My question for you is does my body look unhealthy? 90 Percent of that was diet, I can show you my diet plan (after I sit down and write it out). I want to write specific diet plans and exercise plans for members on here with constant contact with the member. I want my sick PSC brothers and sisters to have the information in my head, I need your help though, what works for you!?

Cool tatts!

Hi, Sprinter! I totally agree with you on the importance of nutrition!!!!!

My 8 yr old daughter Lindsay has PSC and UC, diagnosed when she age 6. My husband and I couldn't just put her on all the recommended meds w such serious side effects for the rest of her life at such a young age.. so we sought out alternatives. We had an integrative doctor do a test which showed that her immune system was reacting to gluten, dairy, soy and egg -- so we cut these foods out immediately. We also put her on a combination of the SCD diet and Dr. Joel Fuhrman's diet (can read about this on drfuhrman.com), so we removed all flour and sugar (except fruit) and are trying to get Lindsay to eat as many nutrient dense foods as we can.

I am happy to say that all of Lindsay's bloodwork immediately went to normal after these diet changes and has remained normal for over a year now with no meds except ursodial. Her UC has been controlled without meds also. The diarrhea seems to return when she gets a virus, so we switch to feeding her mostly pureed nutrient dense veggie soups until she is well again. She was only diagnosed with UC a couple months ago and I think it will take some time for the damage in her intestine to heal, so we are still working on the UC but are seeing definite, big improvements

It is absolutely heartbreaking to see your young child as sick as she was, and we would do ANYTHING for her so that it never happens again and she can grow up happy and healthy... and without the need for strong medications for the rest of her life. I would be interested in hearing more details about what has worked for you.

Hi Sprinter,

you are right with true or false. I meant more the diet must feet your personal need's. Everybody had a different health story. So you have to find out what fits.

My store is that I got with 11 morbus crone. With a special diet and alternative treatment method I have overcome the disease with 22. I have no symptoms at all. I'm now 41.

I hope this more understandable. English is not my mother language.

Bubba brought up a good point on page 2 about the benefits of coconut/MCT oil. Coconut Oil is about 60% medium chain fats which are useful for PSC patients because they do not require liver bile to be digested (it also does not drain the gallbladder or cause the liver to produce bile unlike traditional fats). MCT oil is pure 100% medium chain triglyceride fat extracted from coconut oil, but it has a low flash point so it cannot be used for cooking.

For PSC patients who are deficient in fat soluble vitamins because they are having trouble digesting fats in the traditional way, medium chain triglycerides can be supplemented into meals to help absorb these vitamins. MCT fats are metabolized quickly so you must consume the oil at the same time as the food containing the vitamins you are seeking to absorb.

cookie firstly I just wanna say sorry and i can’t imagine how hard this is for you 6 years old is very young to get PSC and my heart goes out to you. It sounds like you have done a lot of research yourself on nutrition! You sound like an amazing parent! Those diets look amazing and I’m going to read all of it. I would be interested in seeing her average day of meals, when she eats, how much and what. also if she does or can do is any exercise. And if she needs to put on weight.

I would have endless ideas on different foods and diets if your interested :)

I really recommend a product called Acai and is the richest source of antioxidants that we know of right now. Its a super fruit from the amazon and I have it with breakfast every day.

Hey cosmo, I see what you mean very very true! :)

Oh my goodness thats amazing!! That makes me excited! 19 years! I would love see your diet so i can document it and research it and apply it to my life!! Please private message me with your diet as I want to learn more of whats worked for you!!! Your english is fine :)

Wow jtb thats intense! Very cool, I want to apply that to my diet! How do you consume it without cooking it? and how much should you have?

For a reference regarding the use of MCT for PSC patients, see the following article pages 95-96:

http://www.medicine.virginia.edu/clinical/departments/medicine/divisions/digestive-health/nutrition-support-team/nutrition-articles/April2006.pdf

MCT oil is available as a liquid or as gel capsules that are easier to transport. It is mostly tasteless so I usually just pour it into whatever I'm eating/drinking. My issue is a vitamin D deficiency so I typically add a tablespoon or so to my cereal in the morning and a tablespoon into a glass of milk at night with dinner. When I'm out and about in the middle of the day I'll pop a gel-cap or two with a meal.

I recommend starting with small portions (1 teaspoon once or twice a day) to get used to it. Some people report it upsets their stomachs, but they are usually using it as a meal substitute and aren't consuming it with food.

Yeah when I had it ages ago it made me sick but I wanna try it the way you said, before or with a meal! Thanks heaps!

thanks for letting me know about acai - I will try it and would love to hear more. You asked about Lindsay's diet. She is 8 now, and it can be hard getting healthy food into her. Here are her favorites that we eat all the time. Breakfast: she wakes up with a fresh juice, usually some apple or orange with carrot, spinach and kale. I freeze some in an ice pop for dessert later. She also has gluen free rolled oats w almond milk, hemp, chia, flax and berries. Lunch: usually quinoa with different combinations of veggies and fruit on the side. She also sometimes has a salad with grilled chicken. Favorite snacks are nuts, sunflower and pumpkin seeds, Lara bars, and those squeezable apple sauce blends. For dinner, she likes grilled chicken or baked cod topped with a little almond flour crust with sweet potato, veggie and fruit on side. Or she'll have veggie chili w wild rice. Another fave is black bean pasta topped either w broc in garlic and oil or kale pesto with side salad. Lindsay lost weight w UC but is back to normal now, which has always been thin.

http://www.riolife.com.au/ This has a lot of information on acai!

Her diet is amazing!! I see you have chia and flax which is amazing! Here is another similar product I have a picture attached (have a read of the information on the front of the LSA Packet):

LSA is useful in detoxing and cleansing the liver.

http://jlpark.hubpages.com/hub/Health-Benefits-of-LSA-Linseed-Sunfl...

I see you have a juicer which is awesome! Turmeric (attached picture) Is really really good for the liver, it may not taste that great but the benefits are unbeatable!

I have my turmeric in a juice with: (just an idea of how to consume it.

BLOOD ORANGE(or normal orange) + CARROT + YELLOW BEET + TURMERIC + GINGER JUICE + Sometimes Kale.

4 carrots
2 blood oranges (or any seasonal orange variety)
1 small yellow beet
4-5 pieces turmeric root
1-inch fresh ginger

Process all ingredients through a juicer, separating the pulp from the juice. Serve and enjoy immediately. Fresh juice is best enjoyed within 30 minutes of juicing it. If you plan on storing it before drinking, seal in an airtight container immediately and refrigerate. Cold-pressed juice will last up to 5 days sealed and stored.

Note: If you can’t find fresh turmeric, stir in 1 tsp of organic turmeric powder instead.

- See more at: http://vidyacleanse.com/2013/01/turmeric-is-the-new-kale/#sthash.ob...

Here are some more really good super-foods which have endless, life sustaining properties:

Raw Organic Goji Berries (handfull on her oats)

Organic Raw Cacao Powder (2 teaspoons in her oats)

Organic Spirulina powder (maybe add 2 teaspoon in smoothies or juices)

Cooking destroys most of the nutrients in our food so try and consume everything as raw as you can!

More nutritionally food to help sustain your daughter if you want more ideas just ask, hope you have a nice day :)
